And so although I’ll be saying a great deal about the Phaedo once we turn to it, I want to just take a minute or two and say a couple of introductory remarks. Starting next week, we’re going to be looking at Plato’s dialogue, the Phaedo. Now, I’ll come back to that sort of argument in just a minute, but let me bracket that for a moment and say something about Plato. And so we need to appeal to, we need to posit, the existence of, a soul. We can’t explain it in terms of… in purely physical terms. The thought is that there’s something about us that needs explaining. Professor Shelly Kagan: We’ve been talking about the question, “What arguments might be offered for the existence of a soul?” And the family of arguments that we’re considering initially are arguments that get known as inference or inferences to the best explanation.
